Positive Thinking vs. Reality
I turned my car on today and heard a sound like trickling water. I spent five minutes trying to figure out where the leak was. Eventually, I realized it was the relaxing sound of a babbling creek from my relaxation CD.
I think I need a vacation. Or at least, I need to find ways to relax my mind so that every little thing that happens is not perceived as the worst case scenario.
I’m in my car, I hear running water, I assume it’s the car leaking something. I immediately see dollar bills fighting to get out of my wallet and into the hands of the auto repair shop. I suspect all of my money has wings.

I put that CD in my car radio in an attempt to relax while driving. It’s titled, “Lifescape’s Relax and Unwind: Relaxing Rain”. I’m thinking about replacing it with something a little less scary like maybe Lifescapes: Best of Massage & Meditation.
Well, once I realized that the sound of running water was coming from the very thing I hoped would help me relax, I was able to laugh at myself. In fact I laughed all the way home that night. Laughter is good for you!
But it did emphasize the fragile state of mind I was living in then. It made me want to change the way I think. I’ve never been a “Pollyanna” type personality but I’m not usually a “Negative Nelly” all the time either. I prefer to think of myself as a realist.
Is a Realist a Pessimist?
There are those who consider a realist the same as a negative thinker but I strongly disagree with that line of thinking. And yet, my reaction to the sound of running water really points in that direction.
I’m training to always think positive. I’m training to stop automatically assuming the worst. I’m training my mind to dismiss my feelings of impending doom. This will be like little vacations for my mind, to always think positive, happy thoughts rather than trying to predict the worst case scenario. The classic book by Napoleon Hill, Think and Grow Rich places great emphasis on the power of thought in our lives. I believe the power to be stress free is locked in the mind, just waiting to be unleashed!

While I can’t guarantee that self hypnosis is the answer for dealing with today’s stressful situations, I have found that if nothing else, it will give me more pleasant moments prior to the point when I realize something really is leaking!
