How to Hang a Collection of Picture Frames

Hanging Picture Frames

Framed pictures are one of the easiest ways to make a house into a home. Have you ever admired a wall of picture frames and wondered how to hang them? It’s not that hard to do and with a little planning, you can have your own gallery of photographs and happy memories.

Another home decorating idea that has become very easy to create is photographs on canvas. Whether framed or unframed, pictures on canvas can really have an impact on an ordinary wall.

Things You’ll Need To Hang Picture Frames

  • Hammer
  • Nails or picture hangers
  • Tape measure
  • Level and string
  • Pencil
  • String
  • Pushpins
  • Picture frames

Guidelines to Determine Height to Hang Picture Frames

Divide the height of the frame by two, subtract the distance of the top of the frame to the hanging device. Add this number to average eye level. The sum is the height at which the hanger should be nailed to the wall.

Tips for Hanging Picture Frames

  • Choose the ideal wall for your collection of pictures. You don’t want to pick a wall that is already crowded with other accessories.
  • Pictures are usually hung at eye level, or just a little higher. If you’re taller or shorter than most people, check with someone of average height to get an idea of a comfortable level.
  • Choose picture frames that compliment the colors and style of your room. They don’t all have to be the same, but you don’t want to combine colors that clash or styles that are too much in contrast with each other.
  • Lay the frames out on the floor near the wall where you are going to hang them. Play with the frames; move them around until you get a layout that you like.
  • When hanging frames in a straight line, it’s best to hang the middle frame first and work outwards for a centered and equally spaced arrangement.
  • Use a level, tape measure and pencil to mark flat, even heights on the wall. Light pencil marks can be helpful when marking corners where you want the next frame to hang. After pictures are hung, use a clean pencil eraser to remove the marks.
  • Create a straight line between two points by pulling a piece of string tightly between two push pins. This will serve as a guide when hanging frames at the same height.
