Easy Cheap DIY Closet Shelves

You can quickly and effortlessly upgrade the family linen closet with an easy, DIY cheap closet shelf system and some stylish storage cubes for total organization.

Our hallway linen closet is really just an open space above the lower floor staircase.  It is also where the attic access door is located.  The existing shelves consisted of the base of the area and two old plywood shelves.  In order to gain access to the attic area, the shelves and everything on them need to be removed.

We don’t use the attic area for anything so keeping shelves or their contents in front of the access door is not an inconvenience.  Upgrading the old plywood shelves with plenty of storage options was the goal.  A DIY cheap closet shelf system was the answer.

For less than $100 I was able to combine three very affordable storage systems that fit into my existing space.  I added color coordinated storage cubes from my local dollar store and turned that ordinary closet space into something modern, functional and appealing.

Steps To Upgrade Closet Storage

  • Empty the closet – easy
  • Throw out the trash, expired OTC meds and toiletries – easy
  • Measure the area where you want new shelves – easy
  • Find shelf system of adequate dimensions – THIS is the hard part

Before Shelf Installation

  • Clean the walls and baseboards – dust collects in closets too
  • Repair dents and dings in the walls – spackle and sand
  • Prime and paint to match the outside décor – think of it as a tiny room

This is the hard part.  Most every DIY closet and shelf system offers limited size selection unless you want to consider very costly, custom made products.  I had a very tiny budget.  For less than $100 I was able to combine three very affordable storage systems that fit into my existing space.  I added color coordinated storage cubes from my local dollar store and turned that ordinary closet space into a something modern, functional and appealing.

Furinno is my choice for a wide selection of modern, easy to build shelves and other ready-to-assemble furniture.  You can easily create the designs you want without overwhelming your wallet. Customize your life and create the atmosphere that matches the way you live.

Take careful measurements and search for the items that will fit inside your storage area.  I used three Furinno 5-Cube Open Shelf systems stacked on top of each other.  They were quick and easy to put together with a Philips head screwdriver. They stack comfortably and fit snugly into my closet.  If my area was any larger, I would attach each one to the side wall to prevent any tipping or sliding.

The cube section on this model allows for placement of a 9 inch storage cube.  Essentials collapsible storage containers from the dollar store are a perfect fit at 9 by 9 by 8 high.
